Cleveland ‘Clevie’ Browne

Cleveland ‘Clevie’ Browne is one half of the Steely and Clevie powerhouse, a music production duo which dominated the Jamaican charts in the mid 80’s,  90’s and also into the 2000s, producing such acts as Dawn Penn, Gregory Isaacs, Admiral Bailey, Garnet Silk, Tiger and others. 

Clevie has been in the music industry since 1972, first as an Artist, then as a Session Musician (Drummer), working extensively for Mr. Clement ‘Sir Coxone’Dodd in respect of works by his Studio One label; then, similarly for other major Record Producers of the era such as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, and subsequently Lloyd ‘King Jammy’ James, and a number of other Producers including Winton Riley on his Techniques Label.

Clevie has emerged over the decades as a multifaceted creator with major accomplishments as a professional Musician, Composer, Songwriter, Record Producer and Label Owner. 

He became a signed writer in 1991 (and remain so) for one of the world’s major Publishing Companies i.e EMI Publishing, now subsumed into Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

The work of Clevie (& Steely) in the 1990’s remained just as strong with production of well-known projects such as Street Sweeper and Nine Night. Along with Steely and Clevie Productions, the duo also operated the label Studio 2000. The duo has played instruments on a vast number of recordings, and owns an equally vast repertoire of sound recordings. 

Steely and Clevie records has produced such hits as ‘Last Week’ (Constant Spring) by Mr. Vegas, the remake of the Dawn Penn hit ‘No No No’ as well as the major international hit from Sean Paul and Sasha ‘I’m Still In Love With  You’.

Clevie has remained active on the local sphere dedicating efforts to fine tuning the Music Business in Jamaica. He was instrumental in the formation of the Recording Industry Association of Jamaica (RIAJam) and served as Chairman for consecutive terms. 

Clevie is also a Director of the Jamaica Signature Beats.   

Since he began serving on the Board, Clevie has also amassed an impeccable record of attendance and participation. He has a perfect record of attendance during the current term of the board. 

In 2015 Clevie was listed in the Jamaica Observer’s Top Ten Dancehall Record Producer, and Top Ten in Dancehall Trendsetter for innovative and pioneering work in the dancehall genre, alongside ‘Steely’. 

Apart from serving on the JAMMS, Clevie has also dedicated his time and effort in serving the Society’s Governance Committee.
